Take Action to Protect Your ISP from Copyright Violations by End of 2017
DMCA Designated Agent registrations due Dec. 31
In order to protect themselves from copyright violations committed by their customers, all ISPs and broadband providers need to register a Designated Agent with the U.S. Copyright Office by December 31, 2017.
Registering a Designated Agent and posting that information along with your company’s copyright infringement enforcement policies on your website provides safe harbor protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The Designated Agent should ideally be the employee best suited to receive and manage any copyright infringement notices.
This deadline applies to ALL ISPs and broadband providers, even those with existing DMCA Designated Agent registrations filed prior to implementation of the online database in December 2016. Companies must update their information and refile it in the Copyright Office’s online system by December 31.
If you need more information about the DMCA, assistance developing policies that allow you to suspend or terminate customers for copyright violations, or help registering a DMCA agent, please contact Terri Parrilla or Cassandra Heyne in JSI’s Maryland office at 301-459-7590.
