Reminder: 988 Dialing Code Effective July 16
Effective July 16, 2022, dialing 988 will provide direct access to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis hotline. In preparation for this important new three-digit code, all telecommunications carrier networks must be prepared to route 988 calls to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK).
Service providers in area codes that use seven-digit dialing and 988 as the first three numbers in seven-digit phone numbers are required to implement ten-digit dialing to ensure callers do not experience call delays reaching 988.

Service providers in the impacted NPAs are required to report to the NANPA when they have enforced mandatory ten-digit dialing. Carriers notify the NANPA of the milestone completion by emailing 988@somos.com.
In addition, covered text providers must also support text messaging to 988 by routing text messages sent to 988 to the Lifeline’s ten-digit number, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK).
Service providers not required to transition to ten-digit dialing are still encouraged to educate customers on the new 988 code for direct access to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis hotline.
