President's Message

Since 1962, John Staurulakis, Inc. (JSI) has partnered with and fought for independent telecommunications companies, first helping to establish an equitable cost recovery system and now providing a full plate of competitive services. Over these 46 years, we’ve been witness to many dramatic changes – astounding technologies, new rules, shifting policy priorities, exciting new services, and even unfamiliar competitors. But one thing has remained constant within an ever-fluid industry environment – JSI still stands as an advocate and resource for community based telecom providers.

As we know, our industry and your operations are in transition. In these uncertain times, JSI clients face increased scrutiny from federal regulators about your regulated operations, while your traditional revenue streams remain stagnant or fall into decline. At the same time, policymakers are contemplating drastic restructuring of traditional cost recovery mechanisms. Across the industry, providers must come to grips with the pressures on their traditional business as they cope with financial and technical realities making their viability more problematic. Compounding the situation, even as you tackle these challenges, your subscribers are reeling from the stress of the nation’s economic woes, and we are reminded that ILECs and their affiliates are not immune from the financial blows pummeling their customers.

Independent companies and cooperatives have come a long way in the last four decades. After offering high-quality local voice service for years and years, most JSI clients have emerged as full-service providers delivering advanced communications, information, and entertainment services to rural areas – many for the first time. Many rural citizens still depend on community based providers for the advanced telecom services that are now central to how we work, live, and play. By helping to ensure that those companies, our clients, can continue to provide those services, JSI helps to maintain an important commitment, one that ensures all Americans enjoy the benefits and advantages of IP-enabled telecommunications.

As your journey from monopoly to competition progressed during the 1990s, JSI changed to meet your needs, helping you broaden your service lines and grow your businesses. Now, confronted by even more complex obstacles, you must resume a reactive stance, so we again have re-plotted our course. Today, JSI is a one-stop solution for your consulting needs – whatever the opportunity, challenge, or threat your company faces. Whether it’s operational, management, regulatory, marketing, or strategic assistance you seek, JSI’s business knowledge, experience and proven success will help you make the right decisions for your company and your community. With the industry in such drastic transition, JSI’s commitment has never meant more.

This adaptability fits well with our long-held philosophy to provide the folks who look to us with the highest quality service at a reasonable cost. Family-owned and -operated, JSI nurtures a sense of mission and pride in our staff, which is reflected in the quality of service we deliver. As JSI has evolved through our history, we have come to understand how much our success hinges on a genuine interest in the partnerships we develop with clients and our respect for the commitment these companies make to keep rural communities connected. Consequently, it’s not surprising that we take pride that the way we do business mirrors that of our clients. At JSI, we are not here simply to offer a service; we are here to build relationships with those who seek our counsel and assistance. Enhancing — in essence, caring about — the personal relationships we develop with our clients has always been at the heart of John Staurulakis, Inc.

In much the same vein, most of you view the people with whom you do business as much more than "customers." No, it goes much further than that; you fulfill a basic, yet critical, need to ensure that your customers have access to both essential and advanced telecommunications services, and that a certain "quality of life" is afforded. This is what’s important to you – and to the customers and communities that rely on you for service. Similarly, part of what sets JSI apart is our relationships with the companies we serve. You are more than clients – your business is our business, and your success is essential to our success. Together, we are working towards the clear and necessary goal of a bright and prosperous future for rural America.

Manny Staurulakis

President
